Check a customer's VAT ID
If you invoice businesses in other EU countries without VAT (reverse charge), your customer’s VAT ID must be valid. That’s why UNENO checks it for you with the official EU register VIES — automatically and free of charge.
When UNENO checks
Section titled “When UNENO checks”- Automatically when you save, if you enter or change an organization’s VAT ID. Until then the field says Checked with VIES when you save.
- On request, any time: open the customer via ⋮ → Edit and click Check now below the VAT ID.
Where you see the result
Section titled “Where you see the result”- In the customer list it’s in the VAT ID column below the number: ✓ Valid in green, ✕ Invalid in red, otherwise in grey. Hover over it to see the full result and when the check was made.
- On the customer’s overview it’s next to the VAT ID in the customer details.
- When you edit the customer it’s below the VAT ID field, with the date of the check.
What the result means
Section titled “What the result means”| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| VAT ID valid | VIES knows the number. Below it you often see who it’s registered to: Registered as: [name] — compare it with your customer. |
| VAT ID invalid | VIES doesn’t know the number. Ask your customer for the correct number before invoicing without VAT. |
| VIES not reachable | The country’s register didn’t answer just now — it happens. Check again later with Check now. |
| not an EU VAT ID | The number belongs to no EU country, for example from the United Kingdom or Switzerland. VIES can’t check it. |
Proof of the check
Section titled “Proof of the check”If your own Business profile contains your VAT ID, VIES returns a consultation number with every check. It’s shown on the customer as Consultation number (proof): [number] and proves that you checked the number on that day — useful if the tax office asks.
