A customer's addresses

A customer can have several addresses — a head office, a branch that gets the invoices, a warehouse you deliver to. Each address is for billing, for shipping or for both. An address for both is one address: change it and the change applies to billing and shipping at once.

You add the first address when you add the customer. All others are managed on the Addresses tab of its overview.

The tab shows two cards, Billing addresses and Shipping addresses, each address as its own tile — the default first:

  • Default marks the address a new document uses first — one for billing and one for shipping.
  • Also the shipping address or Also the billing address marks an address for both. That’s why it’s in both cards.
  • Above an address are its name (only for you, e.g. “Warehouse Leeds”) and the recipient (printed above the address on the document, e.g. “Attn. Mr Smith”).
  1. In the Billing addresses or Shipping addresses card, click + Address.

  2. Under Address for, pick what the address is for: Billing, Shipping or Billing + shipping.

  3. Enter the address name and the recipient if you need them, and fill in the address — as for the customer, with a house number. For a new shipping address, Copy the default billing address gives you the billing address as a starting point.

  4. To make it the default right away, tick Make default, then click Save address.

The first address of a kind always becomes its default.

From an address’s ⋮ menu:

  • Edit changes the address — and what it’s for. Turn a shipping address into Billing + shipping, for example, and it appears in both cards afterwards.
  • Make default makes it the default of that card — in Shipping addresses the default shipping address. The default billing address stays as it is.
  • Delete removes the address for good.

So that a customer always has a billing address, two rules apply — when deleting and when changing what an address is for:

  • The only billing address stays. It can’t be deleted or turned into a shipping-only address.
  • A default stays while other addresses of its kind are left. Make another one the default first. If it’s the last shipping address, you can delete it — a customer doesn’t need a shipping address.

What isn’t possible shows in the menu as a greyed-out item with the reason.

When you pick the customer in a quote, an invoice or a recurring invoice, the document uses its default addresses. To use another one:

  • Billing address: if the customer has several billing addresses, pick one in the editor. With just one there’s nothing to pick.
  • Shipping address: if a delivery belongs to it, switch on With shipping? in the editor; the default shipping address is preselected, and you can pick another. If the customer has none yet, click Add a shipping address — you add it right in the editor, without leaving it.

On the PDF the shipping address is one line right below the line items, before the closing text: Ship to: … — abroad with the country. Whether domestic addresses show the country too is set by the option Show the country on domestic addresses too. An e-invoice carries it as the delivery address.
